“Bang, bang – you’re dead!”

Why do we sometimes feel like hurting people on purpose?
Why do we humiliate the weaker? With words, actions, thoughts…
Does it make us stronger?
Does it give us the confidence we lack?
What prompts us to give vent of our anger on innocent people?

Whatever the answer, does it really feel good to hurt people? Is the feeling of supremacy we thus derive really that great? Or perhaps our atavistic nature still binds us to the Cave Age? Does it make us feel a surge of adrenalin; do we feel elated because of it? Who cares about the hurt, humiliated, killed by words, actions, and thoughts?! Sometimes we hurt even without the slightest intention to do so… I don’t know if the ones feeling superior to others actually realize their own baseness. Because by hurting others they mainly obliterate themselves. We hurt each other at school, at home, in the disco, on the street… What do we expect… the society of which we’re part has become too commercial, without any values to sustain it? And we could be angels… All we have to do is to regard the others as our equal… We need to break our shell and become more sensitive to the little things. We need to find that kindness that makes us feel more secure and confident. Let it be our pillar, so we don’t feel the need to hurt each other.

These are only few of the lines of thinking that occupied our minds while rehearsing this otherwise clear and expressive play. A boy kills five of his classmates, his parents… and… in the long run, himself.

V. Antonova – director of the performance

Small Youth Theatre Behind The Market

Presents

“Boryana”
by Yordan Yovkov

Premiere – 16th of February, 2006

The premiere of Boryana was held on the 16th of February in the grand hall of Youth Center Haskovo. The Hall could hardly accommodate the 250 guests, who had come to immerse in the world of Yovkov, competently recreated by the young actors. Representatives of Haskovo Municipality, as well as the principal of Drama Puppet Theatre Ivan Dimov Haskovo Boil Banov, and professional actors were among the guests. Students from the other companies of the theatre studio had come to see what their peers had been doing for the last months. Employees of the Youth Center, parents and people close to the young actors and many teachers and students from high schools in Haskovo had come to see the play. Having been kept on the edge of their seats for an hour and ten minutes, the audience rewarded the actors with a storm of applause and a myriad of flowers. The premiere provoked unprecedented interest among the media in Haskovo – the event had coverage by Recording-Aida TV, Darik Radio and the two local newspapers. The success of the premiere and its reverberation were a deserved reward for the four months during which the actors were working on the play.

    Some quotes of the play:

“What? Money? Where do I get it? Strange people, are you, didn’t it sink in that money I don’t have! Oh, if I only had, it would be easy, but I don’t. You’re always hassling me: give, give. I don’t have, get this once and for all – money I don’t have!”

Zlatil

“So much money! Gold, pounds, crowns! And he buried it in the ground as if it were not money but corpses. It is gold, not something else, why don’t you calculate it, how much it makes! You could buy the world… Wait, till it falls into my hands, you’ll see what I’ll do…”

Rali

“Is this so? We’re the bad again, ha? Rali, let’s go. Others are wishing you ill, pity you don’t see it… If it were not for Rali, you would starve to death. Who is going to work the fields – Rali, who is going to do something useful – Rali. And still, we’re the bad ones. Those, those there, are stealing from you, it’s that you don’t see”

Vida

“Don’t you worry!… Do you want me to tell you something? As if it came right here near this ear and it told me “Boryanke, you’ll suffer much, Boryanke, your father will come, what are you going to do then?”… And another voice whispers in my other ear saying “Don’t worry Boryanke, nothing bad is going to happen, everything will fall into place. This voice is the angel’s and the other – the devil’s. And I obey the angel.”

Boryana

“Hey, Boryana, Boryana! She is worth more than money. When was this before at this house? Even a swallow or a stork wouldn’t make a nest here. They would at people’s houses but never here, as if we were cursed. And now, here came a bird and it sings!”

Andreya

“Boryanke, listen to me. Even if your father does not pursue us, even if my father consents, you couldn’t live in this house. You don’t know what it is like… My father, he even grudges the bread he eats; my brothers are constantly fighting. It is better if we live on our own. And money… Money, I have found…”

Pavli

“I don’t feel well, I feel weak, I can hardly stand on my legs, something is constantly choking me, something like a lump. I wake up in the middle of the night, shaking; everything scares me. I can’t help feeling that something bad will happen.”

Elica

“Holy Mother! When I whack him on the head, when I wallop him once or twice. What a viper am I. Does he dare to trample on me, he is mine!”

Vasil Vaklin

“Who? I? Hey! If you had only come closer?…”
